Google Opens Up;Apple Closes Down

Posted in Off the Wagon on September 23rd, 2008 by Keith

Tmobile formally launched the HTC G1 today; the world’s first phone based on Google’s Android open-ish OS. It looks pretty cool, however I am concerned about it’s ability to appeal to the main-stream. Android seems like one of those OSes that will cater to the tech savvy, which may hinder penetration into traditional user markets.

On another note, Apple has taken some interesting steps to lock things down! From rejecting apps for competing with them to including NDA disclosures on rejection emails. What they faily to understand is that by allowing innovation from independant developers, they are going to open the device up to a larger market. If there was a wide variety of applications available, even those that do what Apple’s do better than Apple, I would much more heavily consider buying an iPod Touch.

Great Firefox Add-On #3

Posted in Off the Wagon on August 10th, 2007 by Keith

I’m an avid Firefox user, as many of you may know. However, there are some websites that I cannot use with a mozilla-based browser, most are work related. A co-worker of mine informed me about an Add-on for Firefox that allows to you render a page using the IE engine thats installed on your computer.

This add-on is called IE Tab. It’s amazing, I am able to access whatever sites I need through Firefox, you can even run windows update in Firefox using this, WOW!

Great Firefox Add-On #2

Last time, I reported out about a great Firefox add-on called Adblock Plus. Today, we’re going to talk about one of my favorite cosmetic add-ons for Firefox, SmoothWheel.

SmoothWheel removed the pixel-based scroll measurement when using the scroll wheel on your mouse, and replaces it with a fluid kenetic style scroll, very similar to the iPhone’s interface. The install is straight forward, and the results are awesome.

I’ve poured several hours into this… well, I guess it isn’t really a game. Actually, it’s kind of depressing sometimes.

Go live your life!

I seriously question it’s accuracy, however.
